The Corvallis girls’ tennis team capped their second straight state championship in Billings on Friday. The team put up 33 points, 10 more than second place Hardin to earn the championship.
Laramie McHugh led the Blue Devils, capping her season with the state singles title. The junior defeated Barclay Fagg of Billings Central, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, to take the championship. McHugh defeated Brandy Lambourne of Havre, 6-0, 6-7 (2) 6-3, in the semi finals. McHugh opened against Anaconda’s Destiny Strutzel and won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round, McHugh defeated Alice Cai of Hardin, 6-1, 6-1.
Roxy Rademacher finished fifth. She defeated Cai, 6-3, 6-4. Rademacher defeated Tatiana Ralph of Havre, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round. She lost to Emily Getts of Columbia Falls, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round and had to fight her way back up through the consolation bracket.
In doubles, Emma Decker and Annie Sangster defeated Mariel Kelley and Emilee Coleman of Livingston, 6-3, 6-2, to finish in third place. They defeated Savannah Green and CiCi Three Irons of Hardin, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round. The duo lost to Caroline Carbo and Heather Luedtke of Whitefish, 6-3, 6-4.
The Corvallis boys finished second behind Billings Central. Billings Central had 28 points while the Blue Devils finished with 23. Havre was in third place with 21. Stevensville finished with 3 points.
Corvallis’ DJ Pekoc finished second after withdrawing in the championship match against Jeff Miller of Havre with an injury. In the first round, Pekoc topped Glendive’s Jory Opp, 6-2, 6-0. Pekoc’s opponent in the second round was John Potenberg of Livingston. Pekoc won, 6-0, 6-2. Dillon Miller of Billings Central was next on the list for Pekoc. Miller lost to Pekoc in the semi finals, 6-2, 6-3.
Alma Powell finished fourth after losing to Polson’s Brady Hislop, 6-2, 6-4. Powell began the tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nathan Sickler of Glendive. Powell’s next opponent was Hislop in the second round. Hislop won, 6-4, 6-2. Shade and Porter Jessop lost their opening round match to Jason Schnackenberg and Cody Wood of Libby, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 7-6 (4).
Stevensville’s Curtis Liston fell in the first round to Hadyn Pettersen of Glendive, 6-2, 6-4. The Yellowjacket doubles team of Colton Belcourt and Joseph Fecteau lost to Dylan McCrumb and Layne Zimmerman of Polson, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
