Stevensville rallies to defeat Dillon
Although they have not had the season they expected, the Stevensville Yellowjackets served notice on Friday that they are still a force to be reckoned with. With one last road trip to finish before the divisional tournament, the team traveled to Dillon to take on the top team in the Southwest A and the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
The game was almost a repeat of their first meeting in Stevensville on January 11th. In that game, Stevensville led for much of the game before Dillon came from behind to take the win. In the game on Friday, it was Dillon who led for much of the game. The Beavers were up by 14 points at the end of the third quarter. But then Jared Schultz zeroed in on the basket and dropped in a couple of long bombs. Zach Gavlak took control under the basket and the ‘Jackets were on the go. Schultz scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and tied the game up at 58 points all with two minutes left in the game. The ‘Jackets went into a slowed down offense and ate up a minute on the clock before Schultz was fouled. He sank both shots and put Stevensville in the lead. Dillon went to the charity line several times but were unable to convert that to points until Troy Scott sank his second shot and put the Beavers down by a point. With Stevensville on offense, Dillon had to foul as the clock was ticking down. Chris Lords was fouled and the senior calmly sank both shots to give Stevensville the 62-59 win.
Schultz sank four treys and was perfect at the free throw line. He finished with 23 points. Gavlak finished with 11 points.
