Fall pasty sale
The fall pasty sale, sponsored by the Ravalli County Democratic Women’s Club, will be held Wednesday, October 16 at the Rocky Mountain Grange Hall in Hamilton. The pasties will be made with organic beef and the usual mix of potatoes, onions, carrots and spices. They may be ordered baked or unbaked. There is an option for 100 vegetarian pasties; first ordered, first served at $3 each. Place your order early with Lisa at 777-3145 or Corrine at 544-8586. Pasties may be picked up at the Grange Hall south of Hamilton between 1 and 5 p.m. on Oct.16.
CSI Montana presentation

RCEDA
Ravalli County Economic Development Authority will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the RCEDA office, 274 Old Corvallis Road, Hamilton. The meeting is open to the public.
Chili dinner
The Victor Community Church on the corner of 5th and Martin Streets will be hosting a Chili/Cornbread Dinner on Wednesday, October 16 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. There will be chili, cornbread, desserts and beverages. Trap release clinic
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will offer a short course in Missoula on Oct. 16 for those that do not trap but want to learn more about Montana trapping seasons and how to release traps. The class includes an opportunity to handle traps and learn how to open them and to hear practical tips on how to avoid places where traps may be set. The course is set for Wednesday, October 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Missoula FWP office, 3201 Spurgin Road. Participants do not need to pre-register. For more information, call 542-5500.
Game and Dance Night
The Center for Spiritual Living invites everyone to Game and Dance Night, Wednesday, October 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with Carol Hensel. Bring your favorite board game or card game to share. Youth-Only Deer Hunt
Montana’s annual youth-only deer hunt—set for Oct 17-18—will come a week earlier this year. The two-day special season is open to youngsters ages 12 to 15 who’ve passed a hunter safety course. Additionally, 11-year-olds who passed hunter safety may hunt if they’ll be 12 by Jan. 16, 2014. The youth hunt is always scheduled during the public schools’ two-day vacation in October, which is scheduled for Oct. 17-18 this year. That also puts youth rifle hunters in the field during the final days of Montana’s archery season. Young hunters must wear hunter orange and follow all hunting district regulations, which may limit them to certain species or require a special permit. To participate, youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult who must also wear hunter orange. The adult is not allowed to hunt during the youth-only deer hunt and should not carry a hunting rifle.
Friends of NV Library Membership Tea
The Friends of the North Valley Public Library need you! You are invited to a Membership Tea on Thursday, October 17 at 12 noon in the Community Room of the Library on Main Street, Stevensville. Come meet the hard-working, fun-loving members who raise money for the Library in many interesting ways and have a good time doing it. No obligation, just good refreshments and fellowship. Wear a hat–the funnier, the better. That’s not required for you, but if you want to join in, there will be extras.
SAFE fundraisers
SAFE is holding two fundraisers this week: Thursday, October 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Higherground Brewing Company, 518 N. 1st in Hamilton, and Sunday, October 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bitterroot Brew Pub, 99 Marcus St. in Hamilton. Silent auction, split the pot, and more. Come support SAFE in their effort to reduce the incidence and impact of domestic and sexual violence in Ravalli County. Trout Unlimited
The next general BRTU meeting will be Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Elks Lodge, 203 State St. The speaker will be George Liknes, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, Great Falls, who will give a presentation about “Big Spring Creek restoration and other amazing facts from Northcentral Montana fisheries.”
Big Spring Creek near Lewistown is a blue ribbon stream legendary for its big brown trout. Big Spring Creek has recently undergone a major restoration but according to George, the fish have remained as hard to catch as ever. This stream is not well known in our part of the state, but is definitely worth a trip to Lewistown to fish and also to stay in the mysterious Yogo Inn there. George will also reveal secrets about some other little known trout treasures in Northcentral Montana, and answer questions about the Missouri and the Smith Rivers. Back Country Horsemen
Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen host their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 17, at the Corvallis School Cafeteria on Eastside Highway in Corvallis. Potluck dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. and the general meeting starts at 7:00. Byron Bonney, Community Forester and Hazardous Fuels Coordinator for Bitter Root Resource Conservation and Development, will talk about Bitter Root RC&D’s hazardous fuels reduction program and the effect of fire on the landscape and on forest health. He has 43 years of experience fighting and managing wildland fires. This summer he worked on the Gold Pan and Lolo Creek Complex Fires, assisting with management of Type I and Type II incident teams. White Ribbon Week
October 18 to 25 is White Ribbon Week, a community-wide event to raise awareness about domestic violence in Ravalli County. Show your support for ending domestic violence by wearing a white ribbon during the week. Ribbons will be available at SAFE, Safe on First Thrift Store and Chapter One Book Store. You can also request ribbons to pass out at your church, business, book club, barbecue or other gathering.
We all have an interest in ending domestic violence. Wearing a ribbon is a simple way to send a powerful message: We all deserve to live in homes that are safe and free from violence. When you wear a white ribbon, you tell people who are experiencing domestic violence their community is supportive and invested in healthy relationships.
Some people wear a ribbon to honor lives lost, some to connect with their own experiences. Some people want to show support for victims, some want to raise the standard for how we treat one another. Some people wear a ribbon to start a conversation, and some to renew their commitment to building a healthier community.
You can also show support for ending domestic violence in Ravalli County by attending the Report to the Community luncheon on Friday, October 18, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Francis Pastoral Life Center in Hamilton, 411 S. Fourth St. This year’s luncheon will feature a welcome by Lt. Gov. John Walsh and a keynote address by Kelly Parsley, Chair of Health Sciences at Carroll College. The 14th Annual Courage Award will be presented to honor an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to non-violence and making our community safer.
There will also be a Community Question and Answer Session on Thursday, October 24, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Bitterroot Public Library Meeting Room in Hamilton. If you would like to learn more about domestic violence in the community, plan to attend. Bring your lunch and your questions; advocates and survivors will be on hand to provide answers and information.
The White Ribbon Campaign is sponsored by the Ravalli County Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, a group of community members from law enforcement, health care, religious, educational, business, and social service organizations, as well as those interested in improving the community’s response to domestic and sexual violence.

North Valley Pachyderm Club
The North Valley Pachyderm Club will meet Friday, October 18, at 12 noon at the Frontier Café, Hwy 93 in Stevensville. Guest speakers will be Terry Backs from Concerned Citizens of Western Montana and Dr. Kate Vandemoer, PhD, hydrologist, will be talking about the water compact. Sprinkle Pink Mammo Man Grand Finale
Mammo Man Grand Finale will be held at the Blacksmith Brewery in Stevensville on Friday, October 18, at 6 p.m. Have a bite to eat and enjoy “Burgers for Boobs” and take part in the “Hammer Out Cancer Car.” You can participate in hammering on the bright pink car to raise money for the Aid for Mammography Fund. Sprinkle Pink Family Fun Run
The Mountain to Molehill 5k and 1 mile Family Fun Walk and BBQ will be held at The Canyons Athletic Club on Saturday, October 19. Registration opens at 10 a.m., the 5k starts at 10:30 a.m., the family fun walk starts at 11 a.m. and the BBQ, provided by Nick’s Family Restaurant, starts at 12 noon.
Bring the whole family and enjoy the BBQ, a bounce house, a pink hair salon and crafts for the kids. You can also pay $1 a throw to pour pink slime over community members. The best pink costume will win a prize.

St. Paul’s Classy Boutique

Green Home Tour
The Annual Green Home Tour sponsored by Sustainable Living Systems, will be held Saturday, October 19. Meet the vans at 9 a.m. in the Super 1 parking lot in Stevensville or in the K-mart parking lot in Hamilton. Cost at the vans is $10. Five energy efficient structures on this year’s tour: a monolithic dome made by spraying concrete over an air bubble form; a biodiesel plant on a farm made with structural insulated panels, SIPs, which consist of an insulating layer of rigid foam sandwiched between two layers of structural board; a battery based grid-tied home with integrated solar and wind generation (almost off the grid); a large conventional home that is heated and cooled for around 50 cents a day by an earth source heat pump system – the first to be installed in the county. The tour will end at Wildwood Brewery near Stevensville for a tour of their strawbale and reclaimed barn timber construction and a taste of their organic beer. Plan on a 5-hour tour, bring water and a lunch. If folks want to bypass the brewery tour, that can be arranged. For information call Jill at 642-3601.
Stevensville ‘Grind’
The Stevensville Playhouse will host another “Grind” Saturday, October 19 at 7 p.m. This variety show will feature performers from all over the valley. The class will cover the basics of financial reports as tools for business owners to manage their cash, assure profitability and make informed decisions about expenses and purchases. Join the Stevensville FFA Ag Issues Team in the High School Choir Room on Tuesday, October 22 at 7 p.m. The Ag Issues team will present their State-winning agriculture issue presentation before they depart for National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
