Head in the sand?

July 16, 2013 by Editor

If Mike Mercer is going to write a snarky letter (July 10th) accusing me of spreading disinformation about climate change and not doing “my homework” before speaking out, one might expect that he would hold himself to the same standard. He didn’t.

Instead Mercer merely picked a climate consensus study from 2009 and pointed out what he thought its flaws were. Had he actually done his homework, Mercer would have found multiple studies documenting that 97% of climate scientists believe that climate change is real and caused by humans.

The most recent and most comprehensive study was published May 15, 2013 in the scientific journal Environmental Research Letters. After surveying 11,944 peer-reviewed climate science papers, that study found a 97.2% consensus of human-induced climate change.

Furthermore, NASA, NOAA, and virtually every college science department in the United States believes that climate change is real and human-induced. And if you expand the question to government science departments around the world, it really becomes clear: there is no scientific debate on the issue.

Essentially, Fox News, Right-Wing Radio, and the Republican Party stand alone in their denial. And how many climate scientists are there in that group?

The evidence is so strong that one must literally be willfully ignorant to deny that human-induced climate change is happening. Or as President Obama so aptly put: a member of the Flat Earth Society.
