The Lady Pirates held off a late surging Darby team to take a 60-47 conference win over the Lady Tigers. Victor came out strongly and built up a 28-point lead by the end of three quarters. Powered by Shai Scheffer’s 16 points and Haley Tillotson 14 points, the Lady Pirates played a solid offensive game.
“The girls played hard. It was a good bounce-back mentally for us after coming off a really tough loss up at Seeley,” said Victor coach Drew Huls. “They’re playing with a lot of confidence. I don’t know where that comes from but they’re doing the right things in practice and I think that goes a long ways.”
Darby is playing without senior starter Julie Abrahamsen who sustained a season ending knee injury in practice. The Lady Tigers didn’t run their pressure defense because of this.
“We can’t run right that now because the girls don’t know those positions well enough yet,” said Darby coach JP McCrossin. “That didn’t affect tonight though. Victor did a good job hitting their shots; we just didn’t get the job done on our end. But I am very proud of our kids. There is no quit in them.”
While Victor was hitting and extending their lead, Darby was struggling with both their field goals and free throws. McCrossin said his team only hit 42 percent at the charity line and that was the difference in the game.
