Football round-up

September 11, 2012 by Jean Schurman

*Breaking news – The Victor/Philipsburg football game in Philipsburg has been forfeited by Philipsburg due to not enough players. The game was scheduled for Friday night.

Stevensville and Florence notched wins this weekend on the gridiron. The Yellowjackets topped Columbia Falls, 41-14, in non conference action at home Friday night. First-year quarterback Jared Schultz threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 144 yards on 15 carries including scoring runs of six yards and 14 yards. Schultz hit Dylan Reed from 26 yards out and Chris Bergman from three yards out. Austin Lords blocked a punt and ran it in for the score. Jesse Sims also scored from one yard out.

Florence defeated Thompson Falls, 54-13, in other non-conference action. Florence’s Derek Brown scored three touchdowns on two short runs of three yards and another from two yards out. Tommy Shepard caught an Aaron Ward pass from three yards out. Shepard also caught a pass from Brady Pickering from 12 yards out. Ward was on the receiving end of Pickering for a 30-yard scoring pass. Brady Heffner broke loose from 35 yards out for the first touchdown in the fourth quarter and then Pickering had a 60-yard ‘pick six’ interception for the final Falcon score.

Corvallis fell to Libby, 34-12. Tanner Palin scored both touchdowns for the Blue Devils. He scored on runs of four yards and 37 yards. Both PATs failed.

Hamilton lost to Polson, 40-12. Hamilton’s Kris Cleveland caught an 86-yard pass from Josh Bauder for their first score. Teague Blome also caught a scoring pass from Bauder, this time from 31 yards out, for the final Bronc touchdown.

Victor nearly pulled off an upset over Superior. Victor put up 20 points before Superior got going and surged to the lead. Victor rallied and was on the way to a tying touchdown when time ran out. Superior won, 54-48. Kyle Ball scored first for Victor on a 40 yard run. He scored twice more on pass receptions of 11 and 26 yards from Matt Kittel. Corey Deering had rushing touchdowns of one yard and two yards and an 18-yard reception for his third TD. Nate Bishop also caught a Kittel pass for a 19 yard score.

Noxon defeated Darby, 29-22. Darby got on the board first when Colton Johnston raced 12 yards for the score. Dylan Knox caught a Mitch Wolf pass for the two-point conversion. Matt Robbins caught a 27-yard pass from Wolf for the Tigers’ second score. But then Noxon went to town and scored three straight touchdowns. Darby’s final score was a 78-yard kickoff return by Knox. He also caught the pass for the two-point conversion.
