BPL preschool story time
Preschoolers are invited to meet in the children’s corner of the Bitterroot Public Library on Wednesday, August 8 to enjoy “Cowboy Roundup!” with storyteller Dominic Farrenkopf. NVPL story time
All youth and families are invited to a special summer storytime on robots.on Wednesday, August 8 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the North Valley Public Library. Participate in a play about the solar system by storyteller and library volunteer, Valerie Jensen, and then make a robot puppet to take home. BPL Wild Wednesday
Celebrate the final week of the Summer Reading Program by enjoying some snacks, and playing interactive games for all ages. “Wild Wednesday” programs begin at 1:30 p.m. on the west lawn of the Bitterroot Public Library in Hamilton. Remember that Wednesday is the last day to turn in your raffle tickets.
Sports physicals
All male and female valley athletes in high school and middle school are invited to the Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center for their annual sports physical on Wednesday, August 8 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The physical will include height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, vision, evaluations for posture, joints, strength, flexibility, heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat. For athletes experiencing skeletal pain, Dr. Jeremiah Clinton, Bitterroot Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, will have an exam area in the rehabilitation center for a brief exam and consultation. Students with chronic problems should be seen by their primary care provider. Sports physical forms are available from doctor’s offices or coaches or online at www.mdmh.org. Parents must fill out and sign the sports physical form and accompany their child at the examination. Payment is expected at the time of the examination. The cost is $25 per student and 100% of the proceeds will be donated back to the students’ school athletic program. Cash or check only, payment is due at the time of visit, no refunds. Please enter the Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center through the main entrance, located on the south west end of Westwood Drive. Marcus Daly Medical Staff members donate their time to make this program possible. Over the past six years, the annual sports physical program sponsored by Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital and the medical staff has raised nearly $50,000 for the valley’s school athletic programs. South Valley Pachyderm Club
Montana Senator Bob Lake, candidate for Public Service Commissioner, District 4, will be speaking at the Friday, August 10th meeting of the South Valley Pachyderm Club. The club meets at 12 noon on the second and fourth Fridays at BJ’s Restaurant, 900 N. First Street, in Hamilton. Baroque music concert
The I-90 Collective, a baroque quartet, will be sharing their music in a house concert at the home of Terry Cry, 2218 Wylie Ave. Missoula, on Friday, August 10 at 7 p.m. One member, Carrie Krause, appeared with her baroque violin in the Montana Baroque Music Festival at Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort July 17-19. She is joined on baroque violin by Adriane Post, plus Paul Dwyer on baroque cello and John Lenti playing theorbo and lute. These four are some of the country’s most desired youthful performers. The ensemble performs on period instruments, and strives to present historically informed performances in a charming, folk-like, and inventive setting. Programs feature progressive and fantastical repertoire from the 17th century, including trio sonatas by Rosenmuller, Uccellini, Matteis, the Merula Chaconne and Falconiere Ciaconna, and works for solo cello by J. Observatory nights
Explore planets, nebulae and distant galaxies during four upcoming free public observing nights at the Blue Mountain Observatory, with the first one to be held Friday, August 10 at 10 p.m. The events are family-friendly, and children are welcome. The observatory, located atop Blue Mountain at an elevation of 6,300 feet, is operated by The University of Montana. Astronomers will be on hand at all events to talk about constellations, how the night sky figures into different cultures and how to find interesting celestial objects with the naked eye or a pair of binoculars. Observing begins about an hour after sunset, and organizers recommend bringing warm clothes for cool evenings and a small flashlight for the walk from the observatory to the parking lot. Viewing nights will be canceled if the sky is cloudy or thunderstorms threaten. Before heading up to the observatory, call 243-5179 for weather and cancellation updates.

Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Event
The Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Event will take place Saturday, August 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Teller Wildlife Slack Barn. Cost is $10 per kid, $5 per adult. All children 17 and under are welcome to participate. Lunch is included with admission. All children get a membership, duck call, hat and prizes. Bitterroot Junior Football 2012 registration, equipment check-out and weigh-in is scheduled for Saturday, August 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Corvallis Community Complex on Eastside Hwy (across from Ravalli Electric Cooperative). South Valley Quilt Show
The Stitch-N-Time Quilters will hold a quilt show on Saturday, August 11 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Darby Community Clubhouse on Main Street in Darby. The theme is “Scrap Happy” and entries are judged by attendees with ribbons awarded in seven categories. Entry is $1 or a non-perishable food donation for the Darby Breadbox. Vendors of home crafted items as well as quilt supply vendors will be selling their items. There will be coffee and treat sales available to attendees, too. Hwy 93 ribbon cutting ceremony
The public is invited to attend the Highway 93 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Bitterroot Valley corridor (Missoula to Hamilton) on Saturday, August 11 at 4 p.m. in Victor. The official ribbon cutting will be alongside Highway 93, at Meridian and Main, and will continue in Victor Park, located behind Farmers State Bank, for the Congratulatory Awards Ceremony. Several Montana State dignitaries will be in attendance, along with representatives from the Citizens Advisory Committee and local Focus Groups, the WGM Group, the Montana Department of Transportation, and the contractors to celebrate the completion of this award-winning, state-of-the-art, highway.
This project has been in the making for many years and is now a completed four-lane highway from Missoula to Hamilton with a bike/walking path running the full 36 miles between Lolo and Hamilton. Cake and beverages will be served. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the Victor Volunteer Fire Hall, across the street from the park. Riverfest in the Root
On Saturday, August 11, the Bitter Root Water Forum will host its 2nd annual “Riverfest in the Root,” a free outdoor community festival to celebrate the Bitterroot River with the whole family.
Let the good times flow on Saturday, August 11 from 12 noon to 7 p.m. at Kiwanis River Park, 375 S. 9th Street, Hamilton. Meet BRWF at its Hamilton Farmers Market booth on 2nd Street before 12:30 p.m. to get dressed up in blue and march in the “River of People” Parade from the Market to the Park. Join in to marvel at a live exotic animal presentation from Animal Wonders and say hello to a hedgehog! Try your luck at the “River Olympics” games featuring an obstacle course, water balloon contest and slack line — complete them all and win a prize! Be sure to take your photo at the “Wacky Raft Photo Booth,” paint your river rock or Riverfest in the Root t-shirt, and enjoy many more interactive tables. For all you anglers, there will be a casting contest and fly-tying table with help from Bitterroot Buggers. Don’t forget to stop by Eagle Scout Elias Horat’s newly completed bridge and thank him for his hard work.
BRWF started Riverfest in the Root in 2011 to provide an opportunity for community members of all ages to learn more about the importance of our water resources in the Bitterroot Valley. The Bitter Root Land Trust, Bitter Root Trout Unlimited, Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge, Hamilton Fire Department, and other local organizations will be at Riverfest in the Root to answer questions and provide information in a fun and engaging way.
Later in the day, local musicians “Joan Zen and the 5- Piece Funky Soul and Reggae Band” will help you get your groove on with a live performance from 4 to 7 p.m. With local food from Tailgate Bistro, local beer from Blackfoot Brewery, and plenty of ways to support your local water group, Riverfest in the Root is a summer day well spent.
Financial support for this event will help BRWF carry out programs that support wildlife conservation, agriculture, community and recreation for all generations. As community support continues to grow for BRWF activities and programs, BRWF responds with additional offerings for community members. Look forward to a year of youth field trips and water quality monitoring programs, public informational forums, volunteer restoration projects, realtor training courses, and more fun and interactive events.

Music festival
“The Sounds of Summer” celebration will take place Saturday, August 11 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. The festival will feature eight of Montana’s top bands: Three Eared Dog, 907 Britt, The Bottomfeeders, The Big Sky Mudflaps, Kristi Neumann, Joey and The Frets, Kirt Miller and Sax Cadillac and The Mike Bader Bearjam. This is Hamilton’s largest ever festival! Food and beverages will be available all day. There will be free limousine shuttles to The Bitterroot Brewery with Royal Limousine. Art exhibit
On August 11th the Ponderosa Art Gallery, 944 Springhill Road, Hamilton will host its 29th Annual Fall Classics Show with an opening reception on Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12 for collectors and artists. The show will continue through the 8th of September by appointment. This year’s show will feature over 50 new works from prestigious artists including William Acheff, Bill Anton, Brent Cotton, Clyde Aspevig, Tim Shinabarger, Dan Smith, Richard Thomas and others. Accomplished artists from Montana and several other states will have paintings, sculptures and wood carvings in the show. Several of the artists have their works in private collections and in prestigious art museums throughout the U.S. Featured will be subjects as diverse as wildlife, western, Native American, landscape, still life, portraits, nautical and sporting art. Garden Tour
Sustainable Living Systems (SLS) semi-annual Garden Tour will be held Sunday, August 12 at 11 a.m. Meet vans to ride at Stevi Super 1 or Hamilton K-mart. Five gardens will be toured, all in the Hamilton/Corvallis area. The tour will last 4 to 5 hours. Bring food and water. The cost is $10 (pay at the vans). Gardens on this year’s tour are: Rod Daniel’s Organic Market Garden of veggies, with focus on species diversity at every level, use of cover crop/green manures, worms, diversity includes a wetland component, dryland pasture, fruit production and seed saving; Kangaroo House Gardens – Helen and Peter Allen, featuring vegetables, berries, chickens and hen house, greenhouse, hoop house, herb garden, a small orchard, and a lot of dahlias; Winter Garden at Woodside Farm – Val and Paul Dannels – a “Solviva” greenhouse for winter market production of greens and other veggies with many innovative energy saving components so that the building produces and stores enough energy to stay warm throughout the winter without the extra cost of heating; Inez Stone Arboretum, by Tony Jarussi, a huge variety of trees and shrubs (did he say 290 species?…we’ll find out); and Cathy and David Fahrenbruck’s garden – master gardeners producing food for Haven House food bank with veggies, fruit trees, berries. Blodgett View Christian School open house

Rotary Club
Guest speaker for the Monday, August 13th meeting of the Hamilton Rotary Club will be Pete Dunn, head of the Rehabilitation Department of Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. Auditions
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Ravalli and Western Montana Addiction Services Prevention Program will hold auditions for the play “Mariah’s Challenge” about the tragic drinking and driving incident in Butte in 2007. This thought-provoking drama will be performed during Red Ribbon Week 2012 for local schools and as a fundraiser for MADD Ravalli and WMAS Prevention to help continue their work fighting drinking and driving and underage abuse of alcohol in the Bitterroot Valley. Auditions will be held Monday, August 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. at 209 N. 10th, Hamilton. Needed are two adult female and two adult male actors and three teen female actors. Auditions will be cold readings from the script. Rehearsals will be one night a week from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning August 13 and October 11, 15, 16, 17, and 22 with performances October 23 and 25 from 9 to 11 a.m. and October 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. Call Faylee at 532-9149 to sign up for auditions.

A free job service workshop will be held Tuesday, August 14 at 10 a.m. at the North Valley Public Library. Gary Palmer of the Bitterroot Job Service will teach job seekers some of the “soft skills” employers are looking for, give tips on filling out applications and writing resumes and cover letters, and tell you how to ace your interview.
