The Lincoln Lynx and the Victor Pirates had a battle on the court in Victor last Wednesday. After trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter, the Pirates battled back to an 8-point lead at the half. Lincoln clawed their way back to the lead at the end of three and then hit a bucket with five seconds remaining to take the 44-42 conference win.
“They (Lincoln) are very strong and very scrappy,” said Victor coach Jay Jagelski. “We had a few breakdowns in the fourth quarter but I thought the kids played really hard on defense.”
The Pirates were down by three points with less than a minute to go when junior Derrick Cavill stepped up and hit a three point shot from the top of the key to tie the game.
“That kept us in the game a bit longer,” according to Jagelski. “It was a great shot by him. It was clutch. He was confident and that’s what we want. We want confident kids out there, willing to take a shot.”
Victor did their best to contain Zane Tams of Lincoln but the senior still scored 21 points. Jagelski said his team did a good job of stopping Tams until the fourth quarter. Conversely, Lincoln did their best to stop Victor’s Kyle Ball but the wily junior still finished with 24 points.
