What a difference a week makes. After the heartbreaking overtime loss to Hamilton last weekend, the Corvallis Blue Devils rebounded with a 38-14 victory over Anaconda.
“After the Hamilton game, we definitely had something to prove,” said senior Stuart Landis. “We knew we were going to come out with a bit of an edge.”
Landis took matters into his own hands in the second quarter. He scored with a three-yard run and then, after an Anaconda touchdown, returned a kickoff 86 yards for the touchdown. Tyler Berner ran the two-point conversion in on both touchdowns. Landis also turned an interception into a 55-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
“We weren’t playing how we should in the first quarter,” said Landis. “But then the seniors decided that we needed to take over the game and change it.”
Quarterback Branden Butt had a three-yard keeper and Berner added a 23-yard run in the third quarter to complete the Blue Devil scoring. Berner had 144 yards on 26 carries. Corvallis had a record of 1-1 in conference play and 2-3 overall.
“We got a little sloppy in the first half,” said head coach Russ Hendrickson. “But we were focused in the third quarter. We just need to put a complete game together.”
Stevensville defeated Butte Central, 41-13, to move OT 1-2 in conference play and 4-1 overall. Although they only led by a touchdown at the half, the ‘Jackets scored four times in the second half while holding the Maroons to only a single touchdown to seal the win.
The tandem of Caleb Vance and Tyler Gavlak combined for 264 yards to keep the offense moving. Vance had 114 yards passing and completed 9-14 passes including five touchdown passes. His targets were Josh Lords for a 45-yard scoring reception, Josh Haynes for four yards and 26 yards, and Austin Lords for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Josh Lords also had a 69 romp to the end zone.
Florence defeated Eureka, 46-20, in Class B action. Zac Newbary accounted for five of the seven touchdowns. The quarterback hit Riley Philips twice on passes of 2 yards and 4 yards, Dylan Reynolds for a 47-yard pass and a 61-yard pass and Aaron Ward for 14 yards. Tanner Cobs had a 25-yard run to the end zone and one for 14 yards.
In other action, Hamilton fell to the No. 1 ranked Dillon Beavers, Darby lost to Drummond and Victor defeated Noxon, 28-21.
