The Victor boys had a couple of things going their way this weekend at the District 13C track meet. They had a large amount of competitors on the track and in the field events, and they had Tyler Coorough. The combination gave the Pirates a resounding 169 point advantage over second place Seeley-Swan. Coorough won four events: the 100, 200, 400 and triple jump. In addition, Victor won seven more events out of a possible 17 events.
Coorough, a junior, cruised to a win in the 400 and edged out competitors in the 100 and 200. He won the triple jump with an effort of 38 feet, 2 inches, edging out teammate Kyle Ball for that event. Ball won two events, the 110 hurdles and the high jump. Ball had a commanding lead in the 300-meter hurdles when he tripped over the second to the last hurdle and fell down. After lying there for a second, he got up and finished the race in second place. Dennis Mitcham also was a double event winner. He won the 800-meter race and the 1,600 races. Kurt Manely continued his dominance in the javelin in spite of the gale force winds and won that event. Zac Agee won the long jump and the 4×100 team of Agee, Coorough, Ball and Randy Lewis won that event.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Coach Brandon Howell of his Pirates. “The boys really came out and competed well. We actually had a lot of guys score that really weren’t supposed to score. That makes it even more fun. Freshmen and sophomores that do well, it keeps them excited about the sport.”
Shai Scheffer picked up her first win all season in the 300-meter hurdles. Coach Howell said her time was a personal best. “She did that in the 300 hurdles and then came right back and scored points in the 200 finals.”
