I am sick of the “red herring” argument about illegal entry into this country and the ridiculously politicized “solutions.” The people crossing our borders illegally are largely coming because of the greater economic opportunities in this country which only exist because U.S. citizens are willing to hire them. Much like the ill-conceived and overly politicized “war on drugs” of the 1990’s, we have a demand problem and are attempting to address it by stemming the supply. There is demand for cheap and easily exploited workers in this country so there will continue to be supply. Increasing enforcement, building a wall etc. all feel-good supposed solutions won’t do much but sure make political hay.
Having a robust program identifying those legal to work in this country and severely punishing those individuals who hire workers outside of that program is a real solution that will be effective, cheaper and puts the responsibility where it belongs. I am calling on our legislators to show leadership and introduce legislation that will solve this problem and move us on from the ridiculous aspects in which this problem has been framed in Washington.
Address our labor issues with a verifiable guest worker program. Get the DACA kids that don’t break the law a path to citizenship. Spend our enforcement money on policing employers, developing an effective employment verification system and putting those that are responsible for this problem, those who knowingly hire non-documented workers, behind bars.
