NVPL ‘Dreaming Summer’ Storytime

All youth and families are invited on Wednesday, August 15 at 10:30 a.m. for a special summer storytime. Participate in a play based on the story, “The Fisherman and his Wife” by storyteller and library volunteer, Valerie Jensen. Back Country Horsemen

Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen host their last outdoor meeting of the summer on Thursday, August 16, at the Coyote Coulee Trailhead, located up Lost Horse Road. Potluck dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and the general meeting starts at 7:00. Steve Archibald, Education & Outreach Specialist for the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center, will present a wilderness review, including the changing wilderness user demographics and information on the Carhart Training Center’s education and outreach efforts. He will host a discussion on how to become partners to strengthen wilderness and backcountry riders’ values. August trail projects and the fair fundraiser will also be discussed. PFLAG Hamilton-Bitterroot will meet Thursday, August 16 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in the community basement room. At the start of the meetings time is allowed for the support of parents, families, friends of lesbians and gays. The second half of the meeting has a program. This month there will be a viewing of the MTV film “It Gets Better”, which has been nominated for an Emmy Award. Forest Friday breakfast

Bitterroot National Forest Supervisor Julie King will hold this month’s Forest Friday breakfast on Friday, August 17 at BJ’s Restaurant, 900 N. 1st street in Hamilton. The public is invited to join her for breakfast and discussion from 7 to a.m. This month’s topics and speakers include: 2012 Wildfire update – Rick Floch, fire management officer – Bitterroot National Forest; Blodgett Pass Trail Rockslide – Deb Gale, wilderness program manager – Bitterroot National Forest. Forest Fridays were started this year by the Bitterroot National Forest. They occur every other month and are a no-host breakfast meeting at a local restaurant with the goal of sharing good food, great company, and a little information about what’s happening on our National Forest. North Valley Pachyderm Club
The North Valley Pachyderm Club will meet Friday, August 17 at 12 noon at The Frontier Café, Hwy 93 in Stevensville. The North Valley Pachyderm Club meets the first and third Friday of each month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Frontier Cafe. The North Valley Pachyderm Club is an educational arm of the Republican Party. All are welcome.


Car Club Tour
The Bitterroot Valley Dusters will host the 2012 Fall Tour in Hamilton, August 17-19. Beginning from the host hotel, TownHouse Inn, on the 17th at 4 p.m., the Classic will parade to 10th Street in Hamilton, on to West Main Street, and continue to the Daly Mansion. The tour will leave the mansion at 9:30 a.m. on the 18th to the Big Hole Battlefield. On the 19th, at 8 a.m., the event will continue at Northstar Hanger at the Hamilton Airport. This offers a great opportunity to view an interesting collection of classic autos, although participation is not open to the public. For more information call 363-1509.

Bluegrass Jamboree

The Ruby Jewel Jamboree will be held Friday, August 17 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at 4825 N. Reserve, Missoula. This bluegrass event features internationally acclaimed mandolin player John Reischman and the Jaybirds with the Acousticals as the opening act. For information visit

Clothing Giveaway

The 2nd Annual Clothing Giveaway will be held Saturday, August 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the King’s Christian Church, 9830 Valley Grove Drive, Lolo. There will be clothes for work, school, or play in a large selection of styles and sizes. Come and take what you will use. Grain binding demo

The Bitterroot Tire Iron Club will meet to bind grain on Saturday, August 18 at 11 a.m. in Sperry’s oat field just south of Corvallis on the Eastside Hwy across the highway from the LDS Church. If it is raining the binding will be cancelled. Binding grain was a common sight 60 years ago. The grain binder being used was made in the 1930s. Anyone interested in seeing this is invited to stop by.

During the month of August the Hamilton Rotary Club Programs are featuring Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. A representative of the Hospital will be speaking Monday, August 20. The club meets Mondays at noon at BJ’s Restaurant, 900 N. 1st Street, Hamilton. There will be time for questions and discussion. This meeting is open to the public. NVPL Music Makers Storytime

Come to the library on Tuesday, August 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for an enriching music and movement storytime. Melissa Sparks leads the group through singing, movement, fingerplays and stories. This early literacy development program is created for ages birth-five with an accompanying adult. July’s theme is Food and Fun, so bring your appetite! NVPL Herb Chats

Do you have an interest in local herbs or wish you could know how to put them to use? Come to the library for the first in a three-part class led by local business and herb expert, Outlaw Herbalist. They will be discussing local herbs found in the valley and valuable uses for them. The first class is August 21, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The class is free and open to the public. Stevensville School registration

Fall registration for Stevensville School District #2 will be held on August 21, 22 and 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration for kindergarten through sixth grade will be in the K-3 building. Seventh through 12th grade will be in the high school office. Requirements for entrance are copies of birth certificates and current immunization records.


Lutheran preschool open house

Our Savior Lutheran Preschool of Stevensville will host an open house on Tuesday, August 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. Parents of children currently enrolled and those wishing to inquire about fall registration are invited to bring their young students to inspect the facility, to meet the teachers, to get acquainted with classmates, and to discuss the program. Participants may come any time between 5 and 7 to this informal gathering.

Preschool opens on Tuesday, September 4 for the 3/4’s class, and Wednesday, September 5 for the 4/5’s. Openings are still available at both age levels. Parents wishing to reserve remaining spots should call 777-5625 weekday mornings or come to the open house.

Our Savior, affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod,  is located at 184 Pine Hollow Road, about one mile south of Family Pharmacy on the Eastside Highway. Turn east on Pine Hollow, cross the tracks and the canal, and the church will be on your left, marked by three crosses.

Herb group forming
If you love growing herbs, use them medicinally or are interested in establishing an herb collective, come to the Bitterroot Public Library on Wednesday, August 22 at 7 p.m. to discuss who’s growing what, how to support each other, and how to enlarge the world of herbs in the valley. Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service training

A state-mandated Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service (RASS) training will take place Thursday, August 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at 209 N. 10th, Suite C (brown building) in Hamilton. Any community members who are not yet certified are welcome to attend and newly hired employees may take the training within 60 days of hire. There is a $15 materials fee. South Valley Civic Group
The next meeting of the South Valley Civic Group will be held on Thursday, August 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Naughty Moose in Conner.

South Valley Pachyderm Club
Montana Representative, Ron Ehli (R), House District 88, will be speaking at the Friday, August 24 meeting of the South Valley Pachyderm Club. The club meets at 12 noon on the second and fourth Fridays at BJ’s Restaurant, 900 N. First Street, in Hamilton. FFA Alumni Baked Goods Auction
All are welcome to this tasty event on Wednesday, August 29 at 6 p.m. at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. Come bid on some homemade goodies and support your local FFA chapter.
